ABOUT ANDREA MATTIOLI
Andrea Mattioli was born in Vicenza, Italy in 1984 with the gift of his trade, which is also his passion, since he grew up in a family in which knowledge about the fine art of building was a long tradition.
When he was 15 years old, he moved to Bassano del Grappa where his grandfather taught him the real secrets of the art – techniques and restoration methods dating from antiquity. It was immediately clear to Andreas that this was the creative fulfilment he had been waiting for and he eagerly took part in every other theoretical and practical course on technique.
From 2007, he concentrated his energies fully on Venetian marmorino and stucco work and he soon lent a creative hand to numerous prize-winning projects. During a course on the art of gold leaf application he met Mauro Patrini who accepted him as a pupil and from whom he learned all the secrets of Scargliola Carpigiana. Andrea Mattioli has found fulfilment since then as a true artist, a man whose his profession is also his passion.
THE HANDICRAFT
Scagliola is the name Italians give to the traditional handicraft of producing and working stucco marble. This handicraft brings many significant design advantages and possibilities that are not available when working with “real” marble, since the manifold design possibilities it opens up are simply impossible to produce with the rock form. The low weight, the potentiality of creating any individual design wished for and the fact that it can be used for a wide variety of surfaces and shapes are only a few of the virtues of this material. This handicraft was first developed in late antiquity, but truly flourished during the Baroque period. Today there are still quite a few restoration experts and artists such as Andrea Mattioli as masters of this ancient art. It is a creative endeavour where individuality encounters design and design encounters the luxurious. Scagliola is a living skill in our contemporary world, enjoying increasing popularity.
